Mount Sinai Medical Center Chief of Cardiology, Gervasio Lamas, M.D., Appointed Chairman of Medicine. Dr. Gervasio Lamas, chief of the Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, will now also serve as Mount Sinai's Chairman of Medicine. Dr. Lamas has been part of the Mount Sinai family for nearly 20 years and is actively involved with the institution's teaching program and research initiatives.

DRUG NEWS: Hospira Inc. has named F. Michael Ball, president of Botox maker Allergan Inc., as its next top executive, succeeding the only CEO the Lake Forest-based maker of generic injectable drugs has had since it was spun off from Abbott Laboratories. Ball, 55, will Hospira become chief executive March 28, replacing Christopher Begley, who will retire after nearly seven years in the top job, the company announced late Monday. Hospira was spun off as a public company from North Chicago-based Abbott Laboratories in 2004. In a statement, Begley described Ball as the “perfect fit” at Hospira, saying he will work to “extend Hospira’s growth trajectory” and expand the company’s “global reach.” In recent years, Hospira has worked to become a more global company through sales and acquisitions.
